Nusa Penida Highlights: Diamond Beach, Kelingking Beach & Famous Tree House – Complete Travel Guide
If you are planning a holiday in Bali, visiting Nusa Penida should definitely be on your bucket list.
Located just southeast of mainland Bali, Nusa Penida is an island famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs, spectacular ocean views, beautiful white-sand beaches, and incredible natural landscapes.
Unlike the more developed tourist areas of Bali, Nusa Penida still offers a more adventurous island experience. Its winding roads, coastal viewpoints, and stunning beaches make every journey feel like a little adventure.
Among the many attractions on the island, three highlights that we highly recommend are Kelingking Beach, Diamond Beach, and the famous Rumah Pohon Tree House.
Whether you love photography, beautiful beaches, or simply exploring extraordinary natural scenery, these destinations offer some of the most memorable experiences during your Bali holiday.
In this guide, we will introduce the main highlights of Nusa Penida, explain how to get there from Bali, and share how you can explore the island comfortably with a private car and local driver.
1. Kelingking Beach – The Iconic T-Rex Cliff Viewpoint
Kelingking Beach is probably the most famous attraction in Nusa Penida and one of the most photographed locations in Indonesia.
What makes this place so special is its unique limestone cliff formation, which resembles the shape of a T-Rex dinosaur overlooking the Indian Ocean.
From the main viewpoint, you can enjoy a spectacular panorama of turquoise water, dramatic cliffs, and a beautiful white-sand beach far below.
It is one of those places where photographs hardly do justice to the actual scenery.
For most visitors, enjoying the view from the top is already an unforgettable experience. If you are feeling adventurous and physically fit, you can also consider walking down the steep trail towards the beach. However, the descent is challenging and requires good physical condition, proper footwear, and extra time.
Our recommendation: Take your time enjoying the panoramic views from the cliff. There are plenty of beautiful photo opportunities without needing to climb down.
Suggested visiting time: 45–90 minutes for the viewpoint. Allow at least 2 hours or more if you plan to descend to the beach.
2. Diamond Beach – One of the Most Beautiful Beaches in Nusa Penida
If there is one beach that should not be missed when visiting East Nusa Penida, it is definitely Diamond Beach.
Famous for its incredibly beautiful white sand, turquoise ocean, and enormous limestone cliffs, Diamond Beach offers a landscape that looks almost unreal.
The beach gets its name from the distinctive pointed limestone formations along the coastline, which resemble diamonds.
One of the most attractive features of Diamond Beach is its spectacular viewpoint from the top of the cliff. From here, you can admire the contrast between the white sand, blue ocean, and dramatic rock formations.
For adventurous visitors, there is a steep staircase carved into the cliff leading down towards the beach.
The descent is an experience in itself, but please be careful because some sections are steep and can become slippery. You do not need to walk all the way down to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Our recommendation: Visit the upper viewpoint even if you do not plan to descend. The scenery is already breathtaking from above.
Suggested visiting time: 1–2 hours for the viewpoint and photography. Allow additional time if you plan to walk down to the beach.
Local tip: Wear comfortable shoes, bring drinking water, and avoid attempting the descent when conditions are wet or unsafe. Swimming is not recommended as the beach faces open-ocean waves.
3. Rumah Pohon Tree House – The Famous Thousand Islands Viewpoint
Another must-visit destination in East Nusa Penida is Rumah Pohon, also known as the Tree House.
This iconic wooden tree house is located near the Thousand Islands Viewpoint, offering one of the most beautiful panoramic views on the island.
From this location, you can see dramatic limestone cliffs, small islands scattered across the ocean, and beautiful shades of blue stretching towards the horizon.
The tree house itself has become a popular photography spot, particularly among visitors looking for that iconic Nusa Penida holiday photograph.
The surrounding scenery is equally impressive, making it a wonderful place to stop and appreciate the natural beauty of the island.
There are stairs leading down to the tree house, so visitors should be prepared for a short walk. During busy periods, you may also need to wait for your turn to take photographs.
Our recommendation: Visit in the morning if possible, when the light is beautiful and the area may be less crowded.
Suggested visiting time: 45–60 minutes, depending on visitor numbers and photography time.
4. How to Get to Nusa Penida from Bali
Getting to Nusa Penida from mainland Bali is relatively easy. The most convenient option for most international visitors is to take a fast boat from Sanur Harbour.
For a more comfortable and organised journey, we recommend arranging a complete transportation package that includes:
-
Private hotel pick-up in Bali.
-
Fast boat tickets from Sanur Harbour to Nusa Penida and back.
-
Private car with a local driver in Nusa Penida.
-
Return fast boat to Sanur Harbour.
-
Private transfer from Sanur Harbour back to your hotel in Bali.
This arrangement allows you to enjoy your trip without having to organise separate transportation at every stage.
Step 1 – Private Hotel Pick-Up in Bali
Your journey begins with a private pick-up from your hotel in Bali.
Our driver will collect you according to the agreed departure time and take you directly to Sanur Harbour.
We recommend an early morning departure, particularly if you plan to visit several attractions on Nusa Penida.
Depending on your hotel location and traffic conditions, the drive to Sanur Harbour may take approximately:
-
From Sanur: 10–20 minutes.
-
From Kuta: 30–45 minutes.
-
From Seminyak: 35–60 minutes.
-
From Canggu: 45–75 minutes.
-
From Ubud: 45–75 minutes.
These are general estimates and may vary depending on traffic and your exact hotel location.
Step 2 – Fast Boat from Sanur to Nusa Penida
Once you arrive at Sanur Harbour, you will check in with your fast boat operator before boarding.
The crossing from Sanur to Nusa Penida generally takes around 30–45 minutes, depending on the boat operator and sea conditions.
Most fast boats arrive at Banjar Nyuh Harbour, although some services use other harbours around the island.
We recommend booking your fast boat tickets in advance, especially during weekends, public holidays, and peak travel seasons.
Travel time: Approximately 30–45 minutes each way.
Step 3 – Explore Nusa Penida with a Private Car
After arriving at Nusa Penida, your local driver will be ready to welcome you and begin your island adventure.
Having a private car is one of the most convenient ways to explore Nusa Penida, especially if you want to visit several attractions in one day.
The roads around the island can be narrow, winding, and uneven in some areas. Travelling with a local driver who knows the island makes the journey more comfortable and helps you manage your sightseeing schedule.
Your driver will take you to the destinations included in your chosen itinerary, allowing you to enjoy the scenery and spend time exploring each location.
Step 4 – Return to Sanur Harbour and Your Hotel
After completing your sightseeing tour, your driver will take you back to the harbour according to your return boat schedule.
Once you arrive in Sanur, your private driver will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel.
It is always important to allow sufficient time to reach the harbour before your scheduled departure. Do not plan your final attraction too close to the return boat time.
5. How Much Time Do You Need to Explore Nusa Penida?
If you are planning to visit Kelingking Beach, Diamond Beach, and Rumah Pohon in one trip, we recommend preparing for a full day of travelling.
Although these attractions are all located on Nusa Penida, they are spread across different parts of the island.
Kelingking Beach is on the western side, while Diamond Beach and Rumah Pohon are located on the eastern side.
Driving between the east and west coasts can take approximately 1–1.5 hours, depending on road conditions and traffic.
Can You Visit All Three Attractions in One Day?
Yes, it is possible, but you should understand that it will be a relatively long and busy day.
An early departure from Bali is essential, and the time spent at each attraction needs to be managed carefully.
Here is an example of a suggested itinerary:
Nusa Penida Highlights – East & West Island Tour
Start: Approximately 06:00 AM from your hotel in Bali
-
06:00 AM – Hotel Pick-Up: Your private driver will collect you from your hotel and transfer you to Sanur Harbour.
-
07:30 AM – Fast Boat to Nusa Penida: Enjoy the approximately 30–45-minute crossing to the island.

-
05:15–06:00 PM – Private Hotel Transfer: Meet your driver and return to your hotel.
Please note: This is an ambitious sightseeing route. Actual timings depend on boat schedules, traffic, queues, road conditions, and the time spent at each attraction. If you want to descend to the beaches or enjoy a more relaxed experience, we recommend staying overnight in Nusa Penida or choosing either the East or West Island tour instead.
6. Nusa Penida Private Tour Package – Prices & Transportation
At Fun Bali Holiday, we understand that every traveller has different preferences and group sizes.
Some guests prefer travelling as a couple, while others visit Bali with family or friends.
For this reason, our Nusa Penida private tour package is arranged according to the number of participants and the transportation requirements.
Our Nusa Penida package starts from IDR 725,000 per person.
The package can be arranged with the following services:

-
Private car with a local driver in Nusa Penida.

We will recommend the most suitable arrangement based on your group size, hotel location, boat schedule, and preferred destinations.
